Fluorescent Spray Could Help Surgeons Identify Cancer Quickly

A group from the National Cancer Intsitute have come up with a fluorescent spray that identifies cancer cells in the body.  The spray is activated by an enzyme called y-glutamyl transpeptidase that is abundant in tumors. When the spray is used, it chemically targets the tumor enzyme. The enzyme used the chemical to activate the fluorescence signal. This woud allow surgeons to identify all cancer cells need to be removed when a surgery takes place.

Sleep Sensor Hides Beneath the Mattress

The company Bam Labs created a sensor pad tracksvheart rate, breathing, and sleep movements along with other health measures from underneath the mattress.

The sensors are in the form of a thin, self-inflating mattress pad.  A sensor at one corner of the pad measures fluctuations in the air like tiny tremors caused from heartbeats or bigger movements. The information is then sent wirelessly to the Internet, wto a system connected to the internet data to company servers that interpret heartbeats, breaths, and movements. Information can be viewed mobile phone or online dashboards, both of which show trends over time and calculate measures like quality and duration of sleep.

The article states this will help individuals with health and other needs.

Week 5

http://www.technologyreview.com/biomedicine/39035/page2/

How would you feel if you were in the hospital and there was someone present the entire time you were there? What if the same person was there to talk about your medical issues, issues with the hospital or even issues in your personal life? Possessed compassion, humility, and left a lasting experience?

Welcome to the virtual nurse at Northeastern University Hospital.  My blog is about researchers from Northeastern creating a virtual nurse to handle all patients’ needs .  In addition, the nurse would discuss small talk such as weather or sports.

The hospital stated that user were more likely to schedule follow up visits and preferred the virtual nurse over real people.  The knowledge base of the virtual agent also informed patients more effectively about the issues and concern.
Is this a mini Watson?
